Santa Fe, New Mexico Overtakes Charleston as Top U.S. Travel Destination

Santa Fe, New Mexico, has claimed the No. 1 spot in Travel + Leisure’s 2025 “World’s Best Awards,” ending Charleston, South Carolina’s unprecedented 12-year reign. This marks the first time in more than a decade a new city has risen to the top.

Travel + Leisure surveyed nearly 180,000 readers, asking them to rate cities on culture, cuisine, friendliness, shopping, value, and landmarks. Santa Fe scored an impressive 88.8, edging past Charleston (now third) and New Orleans (second, 87.06) for the historic top position.

According to Jess Feldman, Travel + Leisure’s special projects editor, “Santa Fe taking the top spot this year reflects a growing interest in places that offer something distinctive, deep cultural roots, natural beauty, and a strong sense of identity.” ‍

Celebrity allure: Notables like George R. R. Martin (who funded the Jean Cocteau Cinema), Val Kilmer, and Gene Hackman are among its famous residents.

What the Rankings Reveal

Editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford noted that the results highlight a shift toward destinations offering authenticity and character. “Our readers are seeking depth, character, and a strong sense of place,” she said.

The rankings also spotlighted other travel favorites, Mount Desert Island in Maine topped the U.S. islands list, while San Miguel de Allende claimed the number-one international city.
